New Delhi, May 18 (PTI) Delhi home minister Satyendra Jain today asked the adminstration of newly built Mandoli Jail to strengthen its security, in order to make it operational at the earliest.

According to officials, Jain today inspected Mandoli Jail in east Delhi in a move to make it operational at the earliest and decongest over-crowded Tihar Jail.

During the inspection various security loopholes were highlighted.

"The boundary wall of jail is 16 feet high but jail authority said that it should be increased to 22 feet.

Moreover, watch towers of the jail are at low height. Guard standing at watch towers does not have clear view as buildings in the area are taller and obstruct the view," a senior official said.

Jain ordered jail authority to submit a report in three days to fix these security concerns. He also asked to give complete proposal of construction work and material required to finish the project.

Jain also discussed about the profile of prisoners to be shifted from Tihar to Mandoli jail which has a capacity of 4,000.

"While high-profile inmates will continue to stay in Tihar, a separate cell is being constructed for high-security prisoners in Mandoli. It is yet to be decided on profile of prisoners to be shifted here," the official said.

"Mandoli jail is situated in residential area causing problem in installing mobile network jammers," official said.

Government plans to make the jail operational by the month of October. The complex will be divided into six jails spreading over 68 acres and will have the capacity to house 4,000 inmates.

The Tihar and Rohini jails in Delhi have a combined capacity of 6,250 inmates but house nearly 14,000 prisoners.(from PTI)
