Prisoners and visitors will be told to sit down

Prisoners and visitors will be told to sit down

  • 2016-01-12

KEMPSEY Prison is understood to be in line for the latest piece of technology designed to win the battle against contraband being smuggled into and passed around inside the  state’s Corrective Services institutions.

The first BOSS (Body Orifice Security Scanner) Chair in a New South Wales prison has recently been installed at the Goulburn institution, where it is being used in addition to full-body scanners to detect smuggled items such as mobile phones and SIM cards.

“The BOSS chair is currently used by Western Australia and Queensland Corrections and will contribute to a safer environment for officers and inmates here in Goulburn,” said Minister for Corrections David Elliott.

“Mobile phones are a threat to the security of prisons and we take a zero tolerance approach to them.”
An engineer from the Ranger company, which makes the chair, visited Goulburn to oversee its  installation which, Ranger says, has been sold in thousands worldwide.

Apart from its use by prison authorities, the chair’s other customers include African mining companies, which use it to detect employees attempting to smuggle out gold and other precious minerals, and amusement park operators in  the USA, enabling security guards on the gates to detect weapons.

In other developments  the NSW government has announced that the mobile phone jamming trial at Lithgow prison will be extended for another three years and will be extended to include another prison, possibly Goulburn.
