Sabarmati Central Jail to get 4G signal jammers
Eight years after installing the first cell phone signal jammers in Sabarmati Jail, authorities have now decided to install 4G signal jammers to curb illegal use of cell phones by inmates. Jail officials said that out of 24, currently only two jails in the state, Ahmedabad and Vadodara central jails, have jammers. There are many complaints of prisoners illegally using cell phones and even running crime rackets from behind prison walls.
Sources from the prison department said that cell phone signal jammers were first installed in Ahmedabad and Vadodara central jails in 2008.
"With the advent of 3G and 4G technology , 4G jammers became necessary ," said additional DGP (Prisons) T S Bisht, adding, "The current jammers are technically incapable of blocking 3G and 4G cell phone signals. Hence, the decision to install 4G jammers inside Sabarmati jail has been taken."
Jail officials said 4G sig nals, at present, are not available to users in the city, hence the 4G jammers, each of which costs around Rs 30 lakh, were tested at the office premises of a service provider, where some company officials are using 4G SIM cards.
"We have requested Bel (Bharat Electronics Ltd) to con duct a survey with regard to the numbers of jammers needed in the jail," a jail official added.
Meanwhile jail officials said they have also installed three phone booths within the jail for prisoners to call up their relatives. They hope the phone booths will help curb illegal use of cell phones.
"At the time of entry , a prisoner has to give two or three phone numbers on which they need to call. They can call on the numbers twice a week for five minutes each. The calls are recorded for security reasons" said a jail official.
According to figures, in 2014 about nine cell phones and same number of SIM cards were seized from Sa barmati Central Jail, while in 2015, 10 phones and 10 SIM cards were recovered.(from indiatimes.com)
