Trial on dissolution of Thailand's ruling Democrat Party starts
Prosecutors have started reading the closing statement on dissolution trial of Thailand's ruling Democrat Party at the Constitution Court at 9.15 a.m., Monday.
Meanwhile, Democrat chief advisor and the former PM Chuan Leekpai, heading the Democrat legal defence team, started to make a verbal closing statement at 10.15 a.m.
Democrat is currently facing dissolution case for being alleged to misuse 29 million baht (958,000 U.S. dollars) of the political development fund sponsored by the Election Commission (EC) during 2004-2005.
After both sides finish their verbal closing statement on Monday, the Constitution Court will then decide when it will deliver judgement. However, there is a wide speculation that the court will announce its ruling in the afternoon.
The Democrat may face dissolution and its executive members, including Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, will be banned from politics for 5 years.
Five companies of policemen were deployed to keep security at the Constitution Court while ten mobile detention trucks were put up outside the court. Police also set up metal barricades around the court and also use mobile phone jammer to turn off mobile phone signals in the area. (From: Xinhua)
